2022.01.20 14:44 Efficient_Oil_4995 unspoken rule in the USSR

There was an unspoken rule in the USSR that if you saw a line, you go and stand it - you’ll find out later what it’s for. It was usually a line for meat or bread. Let’s not forget that truck drivers instead of delivering the food to the grocery stores would park out back and sell the food from the back of the truck. So, Dead. People really have no idea. American movies were banned in USSR not for some trade or sanction reasons, but because they didn’t want the Soviet people to see the “luxury” the average American middle class household lived in, as it would undermine their control and propaganda.

[OT] WRC's 2022 season starts at Monte Carlo tonight, here's a quick overview of the sport for new fans. 2022 WRC Rally1 Cars (Ford, Hyundai, Toyota)
Hello everyone 🙂
With the new WRC season kicking off tonight at Monte Carlo, I figured it would be good to share the basics of rally incase there's any new fans trying to figure it all out for the first time.
Everything you need is in the text below, but for those that like YouTube explainer videos, I've made one here that covers the basics. (many thanks to the mods for letting me post this).

What is WRC? WRC, or to give its full name, the FIA World Rally Championship, is the highest level of off-road competition in the world. In other words, it's the F1 of rally.
In Formula 1 you’ll see cars battling against each other on a racetrack, but in rally the cars compete on the public roads in a point-to-point format.
Drivers don’t battle and overtake one another as that would be too dangerous. Instead, they race against the clock.
Each driver sets off about a minute or two apart, giving each other enough space to go flat-out through the narrow roads.
Every rally is split up into a number of Stages, and your time across all of them is added up and compared against the rest of the field.
A rally will often take place across a number of days, instead of a few hours like in Formula 1.

What cars race in WRC? Rally cars are highly modified versions of the road cars you see at home. That’s always been a core part of rallying, for well over 50 years.
More often than not, the only component that carries over from the road car is the shell. Everything else is toughened up, lightened or swapped out entirely to improve performance.
The most obvious change from the outside of course are those massive rear wings, as well as the widened bodywork. This all helps with the car’s aerodynamics, giving it more downforce for cornering, and better control over jumps.
Under the hood there’s a lot going on too. WRC cars use very tough suspension systems to deal with all of the bumps in the road, and are converted to all-wheel drive for better performance in low-grip situations.
In 2022 the top class of WRC (known as Rally1) also introduced hybrid power, just like in Formula 1. When the cars brake, they store energy into a battery, and the driver uses that energy to go faster. Here's an official WRC video explaining how hyrbids work.
Despite all of this fancy technology and incredible performance however, the cars are still road legal, and if you’re in a country where they’re racing, you may even see them in traffic between Stages.

Where does WRC compete? In most forms of motorsport, the racing happens in a contained and dedicated area. While the layouts may change, most race tracks come in two flavours: closed-off circuits, and street courses.
WRC is far more varied however, touring the world and giving drivers new and unique challenges with every event.
The season starts at Monte Carlo (tonight!), but not on the streets of the Grand Prix. Instead, the rally cars head up the mountains to tackle narrow roads, full of snow and ice.
From there, the crews head to the high-speed snowy forests of Sweden, the patchy concrete and tarmac of Croatia and then the brutally tough gravel of Portugal, Sardinia, and the Safari Rally of Kenya. Here's the full calendar.
Throughout a season the drivers will have faced every condition there is to offer, taking on tight hairpins, massive jumps, dense fog, heavy rain, dark nights and so much more.
It takes a special kind of talent to succeed in such a challenging environment, which is why the best are the ones who are brave, adaptable and true masters of driving.

Who's driving in 2022? The full list of drivers and co-drivers is here.
Sebastien Loeb is the most successful rally driver of all-time, winning 9 World Championships.
In recent years he’s tried his hand at rallycross, Dakar, Extreme E and many other things, and in 2022 he makes a return to rally with the M-Sport Ford team. He’ll be competing part-time but expect him to be fighting for victories.
If Sebastien Loeb is like the Michael Schumacher of WRC, Sebastien Ogier can be considered the sport’s Lewis Hamilton.
An 8-time World Champion, Ogier’s considered the complete package, somebody who rarely makes mistakes and knows the right balance between risk and reward. Like Loeb, he’ll also be racing part-time, but expect his Toyota to be on the podium whenever he competes.
Behind these two heroes lie several other drivers who are equally as brave and talented behind the wheel. The field as a whole is incredibly close, with days of rallying often decided by seconds. Some drivers will be experts on gravel, others on tarmac, and some are all-rounders who will take on anything you throw at them.
All drivers have a co-driver alongside, who calls out the roads ahead so that the drivers can take blind turns at crazy speeds. Here's a video explaining how pace notes work, if you've played any rally games you might know some of this already.

How does a rally event work? Each rally is a week-long event with multiple challenges presented every day.
Tuesday and Wednesday is normally when the recce happens. Here, the crews will head out to the Stages in normal road cars, and map out each route. This is where they’ll come up with their pace-notes, or improve their ones from last year if the roads are the same.
On Thursday you have the Shakedown, where teams can warm-up on a short Stage and refine their setups. This is like Free Practice in Formula 1.
In the evening you then have the ceremonial start, and maybe 1 or 2 stages of the actual rally (like with Monte Carlo tonight).
The rally proper begins on Friday. Each day has a number of Stages where the teams will go flat-out to set the best times. In between these Stages the drivers will take the cars on public roads to get to the next destination. They’re not racing here though, just getting from A to B.
This repeats on Saturday and Sunday, with the final Stage of the Rally being a Power Stage, giving out bonus points for the fastest times .
After a few Stages the rally cars head back to the Service Park for repairs and setup changes, but on the road, the crews on their own (note: Monte Carlo doesn't have mid-day service).
If there’s an issue with the car they’ll have to fix it themselves, meaning both the driver and co-driver need to be expert mechanics as well.
They’ll also need to do quick tyre changes if there’s a puncture, which leads into the overall strategy of a rally.

Is there strategy in WRC? A point-to-point seems simple in theory, but look beneath the surface and there’s a lot to think about.
First off, the road evolves over time, and what you drive on the recce may feel different when you compete for the best time. At the start of a rally the roads can be dusty as nobody’s raced on them yet.
The first few cars will essentially sweep the road during their runs, making it a bit faster for the cars behind. After a while the roads will then start to deteriorate.
Drivers will kick up mud, dirt and stones from clipping the edges of the road, and on gravel and snow rallies they’ll form deep ruts as everyone tries to find the fastest line. Learning to read the road ahead is a key skill, with drivers adjusting on the fly and deciding how much of a risk they’re willing to take.
This also plays into the tyre strategy. Tyres aren’t as sensitive as they are in Formula 1, as they need to do hundreds of kilometres a day on both the Stages and the public roads.
You have tyre compounds of course, where you choose between performance and durability, but you also need to consider how many spare tyres you bring. Do you go safe with two, and deal with the extra weight on the car, or take a risk and only bring one?
There’s a lot to think about as you try to gain valuable championship points.

What's the WRC points system? The lowest combined time across all of the Stages determines the winner, and the points system is fairly straightforward.
You get 25 for a win, 18 for second and so-on, same as in Formula 1 or any other FIA World Championship. On top of this there are bonus points given out for the Power Stage, 5 for the winner and more for the rest of the Top 5.
The Manufacturers’ Championship is a little more complicated. Teams nominate 3 of their crews before an event, and the fastest 2 of those score points. Some drivers are full-time, and some are part-time, whereas in Formula 1 the same 2 drivers enter every race.

Are there support series? Yes. All classes of a WRC event share the same roads and run one after the other.
  • WRC - This is the top level with Loeb, Ogier and the Rally1 cars.
  • WRC2 - Sort of like F2, features lower spec non-hybrid cars. Some drivers will do both Rally1 and Rally2 in a season.
  • WRC3 - Slightly slower cars still, this year it's all done in 4WD Ford Fiestas.
  • JWRC - This is Junior WRC, a competition specifically for young drivers. If you saw the Codemasters DiRT Rally Team car last year (I was part of the team) this is where it was competing.
  • Many WRC events also run alongside national events, so you may see some old Evos and Imprezas flying about too.

Where can you watch WRC?

I hope all of the above has been useful to you all 🙂
If you have any questions do the Reddit thing and comment below. Rally is a cool sport to follow with a lot to learn about, but a nice alternative to F1 especially in the off-season.
Also, if I helped out in any way with this, feel free to give my YouTube a quick look. I'm hoping to make more videos explaining different things about motorsport in the future, so that we can all enjoy the crazy things drivers do 🙂

Take care,
-PJ

2022.01.20 14:44 Rush_Worlord Why can't God simply forgive us without there having to pay a price/or remove the price of our punishment?

I was talking to my Muslim friend yesterday and he brought up a question to which I am curious as to how yall would have responded to this. He state why does God has to punish us if we repent, could we not "pay the price that justice demands" by doing good deeds instead of Jesus being in our placement? He states that Allah seems to be more merciful here for allowing us to do good deeds to pay that price of sin.

2022.01.20 14:44 Vast_Breadfruit4138 Are humans supposed to live as long as we are?

My apologies if this doesn’t fit the criteria… I was just thinking. It’s only been about 100years with modern medicine to make life mortality to what it is today. Is this why we have so many mental health issues in todays world?
We as humans were only living till our 30s and 40s for an extremely long time and now we’re living into 70s and beyond… I feel like maybe we weren’t meant to live like this for this long. Thanks for listening

2022.01.20 14:44 RachelLeighC Scheduling a c-section.

If you knew you had to have a c-section, how far in advance did you and your doctor schedule it? We are realizing that my di di twin girls are probably not going to move and twin A is feet down so a c-section is most likely in the cards. My 32 week appointment was yesterday and I said I’d like to schedule my c section for 2/22/22 as I will be 37 weeks then and it would be such a cool birthdate. My doctor said he would look into it. How much and when do I bug him so that the date doesn’t fill up?!

2022.01.20 14:44 AI_bloomwow Guys Ethan meant to say Sexist not Misogynistic in the H3TV Niko video!

If you have been a subs of Ethan for a while, you know that even with his degree in english litterature the dude suffers from dyslexia. Consequently, when Dan is not there in the background to correct his words, Ethan tends to do a lot of those mistakes of words, which leads to a lot of misunderstanding. Anyhow, the word he wanted to use is sexist not misogynistic.

2022.01.20 14:44 gryzby Here’s a little tutorial on how to boost at folks on the win screen.

So I’ve been getting friend requests in-game just to ask me how to do this, as I can do it fairly consistently using this method. It’s not too difficult, as long as you know how to air roll by double tapping the on-screen joystick.
Key pointers here are to take your time, I think of a slow sneeze sound like ahhhhhh-choo. Also make sure not to engage air roll until your car is on the ground on the win screen, as it kinda flys in and drops onto the ground. The best way to practice is with a friend, do PVP matches and forfeit.

Sorry for the small font on the photos, tried to do this quickly. Let me know if you have any questions, I’m posting from Apollo and I can’t seem to figure out how to drop in the video. I’ll edit my post or upload in the comments. This has become so natural for me that I may have left something out… please leave questions in the comments and I’ll come back to answer them soonish.
I’m happy to accept friend requests, been focusing mainly on 2s and keep almost hitting diamond, getting knocked back down in solo que.
GLHF!

2022.01.20 14:43 Purdy0574 People night disagree with me on this, but morning glory had a missed potential to be even better then it already is.

Imo, morning glory is one of the best British albums of all time, however, I think it could’ve been even better. The album kicks open with: Hello, a great song and a great opener. However, Imagine if it was replaced with acquiesce, the opening riff and the saying of the phrase, « what’s the story? Morning glory » too me is an even better opener than, Hello. And one last change I would make is switching, « Hey now » for: « the masterplan » imo I don’t think Hey now is that strong of a song, not terrible but it’s just no where near as good as The masterplan. Imagine that track list: Acquiesce Roll with it Wonderwall Don’t look back in anger The masterplan Some might say Cast no shadow She’s electric Morning glory Champagne supernova And if you wanted to take it a step further you could switch she’s electric for talk tonight or headshrinker. Just my opinion.

Hi all. I (geriatric nurse) am starting a new job in a geriatric hospital ward next month, after being on parental leave since 2019 and previously only working in a retirement home. However, due to the long abstinence, I now have a little jitters that it turns out that I forgot half.
So that I can also refresh my professional brain a bit in my free time - which key areas should I study again in more detail? Especially for the field of geriatrics?
